IMLS Library Diversity Associate Position Description (2002-2003)

The Oberlin College Library invites applications for the position of Library Diversity Associate. This full-time (40 hours per week), one-year appointment begins July 15, 2002, and reports to the Library IMLS Diversity Program Co-Director. The position is funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), a federal agency that fosters innovation, leadership and a lifetime of learning.

Responsibilities: The Oberlin College Library's Diversity Associate is intended to increase representation in the library profession from members of underrepresented groups, which include African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latino/Hispanic-Americans and Native Americans. The one-year position will provide the opportunity for the incumbent to be exposed to various aspects of academic librarianship, with hands-on experience in most areas of the College Library's operations, including the workings of public and technical services, as well as library administration. The Associate
will be introduced to the various departments and operations and will perform project-oriented tasks in areas of special interest. The Associate will work closely with the Diversity (undergraduate) Fellows Program and help promote the library and the field of librarianship to the diverse Oberlin College student body. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Participate in the basic operations of many areas of the Oberlin College Library system.
  • Participate in and assist with arrangements for IMLS Diversity Fellows Program activities.
  • Design and lead outreach activities aimed at promoting the library and the profession to a diverse student population.
  • Collaborate with other library staff to develop and deliver presentations related to the Oberlin College Library / IMLS Diversity Program, as appropriate.
  • Write articles about the Oberlin College / IMLS Diversity Program for an Oberlin College Library publication, as appropriate.
  • Attend a professional conference - such as the American Library Association.
  • Serve as a member of the Oberlin College Diversity Committee.
  • Assist in creating and assembling special exhibits highlighting a collection of the Oberlin College Library, as appropriate.
  • Complete tasks/projects in various departments, for example:
    • Assist with Library Instruction program.
    • Work with faculty and students in building and maintaining existing student resource centers.
    • Utilize foreign language skill (if available) in the cataloging of materials.
    • Assist with the research and writing of an article for a professional publication.

Requirements: Oberlin College graduate; interest in pursuing librarianship as a career; ability to work well independently and with others; excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Previous library experience and/or recent participation in the Oberlin College / IMLS
Diversity Fellows Program; member of an underrepresented group in the field of librarianship; previous experience dealing with diversity issues; computer skills; foreign language skills.
