Literacy Experiential Learning Activity 1
Observation of Instruction Sessions
In preparation for the unit on Information Literacy and Instruction
(March 1923), you are being asked to observe approximately
3 hours' worth of Library Instruction, in advance of that week.
Library Instruction sessions are typically taught by public services
librarians, at the request of faculty members.
To fulfill your 3 hours, you will be sitting in on at least two
different sessions make sure that the sessions you observe
are taught by different librarians, and are in a variety of disciplines.
When sitting in on a session, please make sure you arrive on
time (or slightly early if possible), and introduce yourself to
the librarian before the session starts.
During our meeting time in week 7 we will set aside half an hour
or so to discuss what you observed during these sessions. Some
particular points/questions you might want to think about:
- Was the librarian clear about the goal/intent of the session?
- Was the information provided in a well-organized, effective
manner?
- Did the live database demonstrations (if there were any) seem
instructive?
- Did the students seem engaged? Did they ask questions?
- If you had been a student in this course, do you think you
would have found this session worthwhile, overall?
- What would you have done differently if you had been teaching
this session?
Schedule of available instruction
sessions from 2/26/013/19/01
