"Outstanding Academic Titles, 2000"
Annual essay in Choice, the book review journal published
by the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division
of the American Library Association.
"Outstanding Academic Titles," is an annual listing
of the best books reviewed by Choice in each subject area. The
assignment is to check approximately 50 entries in this list against
OBIS to determine
which titles have been acquired by Oberlin to support our curricular
and research interests. The purpose of the assignment is to introduce
collection evaluation. Evaluating a collection by checking lists
of best books published in subject areas collected is an important
collection development activity.
Each entry should be checked against OBIS first by title (this
is quicker, since titles are more distinctive), then by author
if the title cannot be found in OBIS. Write the complete call
number clearly and neatly near each entry in the bibliography
for each title found in OBIS. For each title NOT found in OBIS,
simply write, OBIS - 0.
When the list checking is complete, examine the entries and
think about why each title may or may not have been acquired by
Oberlin. Why do you think this may have happened? Should Oberlin
have purchased the titles not found in OBIS? Why, or why not?
Be prepared to discuss these questions when you meet with the
CD Librarian to discuss the result of your list checking project.
