Readings for Week Four: Cataloging

The following readings are available for class participants through our course page on Oberlin's Electronic Reserve system (ERes). A password is required.

Berman, Sanford. Prejudices and antipathies. Jefferson, N.C.: McFarland & Co., 1993.
Read Preface and Introduction (p. 5-24) and pick an additional chapter.
Berman has been for years the prophet that no one wants to hear.

Gorman, Michael. "The Corruption of Cataloging." Library Journal 120, no. 15 (1995): 32-34.
Gorman continues to be a leading spokesperson for cataloging, and writes here to caution against the dangers of unlimited outsourcing of library work.

Gorman, Michael. "From card catalogs to webpacs: celebrating cataloguing in the 20th century." Talk given at the Library of Congress Bicentennial Conference on Bibliographic Control for the New Millennium, Washington, DC, November 15th, 2000.
A very quick history of descriptive cataloging.

Mann, Thomas. "Is Precoordination Unnecessary in LCSH? Are Web Sites More Important to Catalog than Books? A Reference Librarian's Thoughts on the Future of Bibliographic Control." Paper prepared for the Library of Congress Bicentennial Conference on Bibliographic Control for the New Millennium, Washington, DC, November 15th, 2000. (Full text requires Adobe Acrobat reader)
Mann is a reference librarian who understands and appreciates cataloging from the user's perspective. Skim the first ten pages.
