Literacy Experiential Learning Activity
Observation of Instruction Sessions
In preparation for the unit on Information Literacy and Instruction
(April 2-3), you are being asked to observe approximately 3 hours'
worth of Library Instruction, in advance of that week.
Library Instruction sessions are typically taught by public services
librarians, at the request of faculty members.
To fulfill your 3 hours, you will be sitting in on at least two
different sessions - so that you gain the widest experience possible,
please make sure that the sessions you observe are taught by different
librarians, and are not all in the same subject area.
When sitting in on a session, please make sure you arrive on
time (or slightly early if possible), and introduce yourself to
the librarian before the session starts.
During our meeting time in April we will be discussing what you
observed during these sessions. Some particular points/questions
you might want to think about - or take notes on:
- Was the librarian clear about the goal/intent of the session?
- Was the information provided in a well-organized, effective
manner?
- Did the live database demonstrations (if there were any) seem
instructive?
- Did the students seem engaged? Did they ask questions?
- If you had been a student in this course, do you think you
would have found this session worthwhile, overall?
- What would you have done differently if you had been teaching
this session?
