Key
Personnel
Oberlin College librarians and staff developed the Library Diversity
Intern Program with a grant from the Institute
of Museum and Library Services. Oberlin College alumni librarians
from various libraries across the nation will host program participants
during the Winter Term experience.
Program Director
Ray English, Director
of Libraries, will provide overall direction of the program and
careful mentoring to the interns, particularly those in the process
of applying for graduate school. Dr. English has been Director
of Libraries at Oberlin since 1990. He is recongnized nationally
as a leader in liberal arts college libraries.
Program Co-Director
Haipeng Li, Reference
Librarian/Outreach Coordinator, is a leader in promoting diversity
in the workplace and in liberal arts college libraries. He has
initiated numerous activities and programs related to diversity
since he came to the Oberlin College Library as a Reference Librarian
in 1993. He was a primary founder of the Library's Diversity Committee,
and he has further promoted diversity on a national scale. His
1999 article in the Journal of Library Administration,
"Diversity in the Library: What Could Happen at the Institutional
Level," describes the kinds of diversity programs that could
be initiated in liberal arts college libraries. His May 2000 article
in College and Research Libraries, co-authored with Mark Winston
and entitled "Managing Diversity Programs in Liberal Arts
College Libraries," documents the relative lack of diversity
initiateies in liberal arts college libraries.
Program Coordinator
Heather Smith,
Reference Librarian, serves as the Diversity Intern Program Coordinator.
She works with interns and library staff members to facilitate
the planning and day-to-day operation of the program. Ms. Smith
joined the staff in January 2001.
