Burny Pelsmajer has always enjoyed performing, but his passion, desire, and dedication is for mentoring and fostering a whole new generation of musical talent. He does this through is association with the School of Rock in Coral Springs, South Fla., where he is senior music director. The School of Rock is a national leader in music education for children in second grade through high school.
Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Pelsmajer began taking piano lessons at the age of 5. It wasn't long before he started playing the saxophone, clarinets, flute, B3 organ, drums, bass, and guitar, many of which he taught to himself.
While studying at Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Pelsmajer acquired skills in nearly every style of music—jazz, rhythm and blues, salsa, hip-hop, rock and roll, and more. He specializes in tenor saxophone and keyboards, and performs, composes, and records with a variety of both established and up-and-coming musicians, including Jon Arons, Angela Bofill, Chembo Corniel, Calvin Edwards, Janek Gwizdala, Jojo Kuo, James McBride '79, Fred McFarlane, Me'lissa Morgan, Chris Parrello, Mike Phillips, Angie Stone, and Courtney Williams.
In addition to teaching and mentoring, Pelsmajer performs with his band, Sgt. Grumbles.
