Kassa Overall '05 percussion, composer


Kassa Overall, percussionist, composer, producer, and educator incorporates all styles and traditions of music in his work. He collaborates with a broad range of artists ranging from jazz to hip hop, and indie-pop to avant-garde. For the past two years, Overall has been an integral part of Geri Allen's Timeline band, which tours extensively throughout the United States and Europe. He is also making an impact on the Avant-pop scene with Gordon Voidwell and Guillermo E. Brown, who both use laptops and sequencers to create a groundbreaking and genre defying sound pallet. Overall has also toured extensively with his own band, fusing his jazz and instrumental training with his contemporary electronic passion. Using the capabilities of laptops and samplers on stage is a key element to his signature sound.

Overall received his Bachelor's of Music from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. At Oberlin, Overall studied under jazz drum legend Billy Hart. He also studied with Marcus Belgrave, Robin Eubanks, Gary Bartz, Michael Rosen, and Wendell Logan. His mentors have also included Billy Higgins, Tutti Heath, and the late Elvin Jones. Overall has also shared the stage with an array of jazz masters including Donald Byrd, Slide Hampton, Billy Hart, Wallace Roney, Christian McBride, Ravi Coltrane, and others. He lives in Seattle.
