Charles Foldesh '07 drums


A native of Prescott, Ariz., Charles Foldesh began playing drums at age 10. A recipient of the John Coltrane Scholarship, Foldesh received his degree in jazz studies and performance at the conservatory under the instruction of jazz legend Billy Hart. Since graduation, Foldesh has toured the eastern United States, as well as parts of South America and Asia. He often performs with internationally recognized artists and has shared the stage with Marcus Belgrave, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gary Bartz, Claude Black, Joey DeFrancesco, George Benson, Jimmy Heath, Slide Hampton, John Clayton, Bryan Lynch, and Claudio Roditi. He has appeared at the Texas International Jazz Festival, the Art Tatum Jazz Heritage Festival, the Sedona Jazz on the Rocks Festival, the Detroit Jazz Festival, the Shanghai (JZ) International Jazz Festival (China), and the LaPatai International Jazz Festival (Uruguay).

Foldesh now resides in Shanghai, China. He is the house-band drummer for Asia's number one English-speaking, night-time talk show, “Asia Uncut with Jon Niermann,” which reaches more than 200 million viewers in 59 countries.

Noted for his passionate swinging style, he makes regular appearances at such clubs as JZ, Cabaret (Bund 6), the House of Blues and Jazz, CJW, and Chinatown. Foldesh is often the drummer of choice for recordings and performances with musicians and singers from all over the world. In addition, he maintains a busy teaching schedule at the JZ School and the Western International School of Shanghai.
