Social
Security Regulations for Students in F-1 Visa Status
Concerns
about national security, along with the problem of identity
theft, have caused the Social Security Administration to accelerate
their efforts to protect the integrity of the social security
number. Effective September 1, 2002 the Social Security Administration
verifies the alien status of all non-citizens applying for
original or replacement social security cards with the US
Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS.) For more information,
go to http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10181.html.
International students holding F-1 visas can apply for a social
security number (SSN) only when they provide proof that (1)
they are enrolled in a full course of study and (2) that they
have been offered a job on campus. This is in addition to
providing evidence of age, identity, valid I-20 form, and
a current I-94 showing the F-1 status. The Office of International
Students assists all new international students with the SSN
application process. Students are required to apply for social
security numbers in person. The social security cards are
usually mailed to the students 3-4 weeks after they apply.
We provide detailed information about the application process
and the required paperwork during the international student
orientation in August. Students are expected to find a job
on campus, fill in an Employment
Verification Form and meet with Dean
Katya Grim.
NOTE: Students on visa types other than F-1 must consult
with Dean Grim
about their eligibility to apply for a US social security
number.
