About the Conference
Local governments are on the front lines of combating climate change by working towards dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously pursuing robust economic growth. But just what initiatives are local governments in Northeast Ohio deploying to achieve this, how are their communities benefiting, and how can these strategies most effectively be implemented in your community?
On Friday, October 10, 2008, the City of Oberlin and Oberlin College will host Ohio: Green & Growing—Local Governments Fostering Economic Development and Sustainability to highlight new and emerging local government responses to sustainability and carbon neutrality, with a particular emphasis on those relevant in Northeast Ohio. Experts on a range of local community success stories and economic development techniques will describe what they are doing today to do well financially by doing good environmentally – and how these solutions can create jobs in Ohio and elsewhere.
David Orr, Paul Sears Professor of Environmental Studies at Oberlin College, will give the opening plenary address connecting the global issue of climate disruption with local solutions. Brad Whitehead, President of the Fund for Our Economic Future, a philanthropic organization connecting economic and sustainable growth in Northeast Ohio, will deliver the keynote. Additional panelists and speakers include GreenCityBlueLake Institute Director David Beach and ICLEI Midwest Regional Director Amy Malick.
The conference is aimed at local government officials, policymakers, community organizers, entrepreneurs and community members from Northeast Ohio and beyond.
