Testing Methods

What is it?

The HIV Test Specialists provide free, confidential, anonymous, oral HIV antibody tests to members of the Oberlin Community.

    Confidential

means that everything you and the peer counselor talk about stays between you and the counselor.

    Anonymous

means that you are given a testing number. You are not identified (i.e. your name, social security #, OCID, etc.) in connection

How to get tested?

To get tested you have plenty of options:

    Peer-to-Peer Testing

This testing takes place in Wilder 314. The counseling and test is administered by an Oberlin College student and sponsored by the Office of Health and Life Skills Education . You will sign up (with a made-up name) on the sheet next to the door and when the test specialist is ready, they will call you in. This testing is done on a walk-in basis.

How the testing works

During our testing hours, you come up to the Wilder 314 Outreach Office to talk to a Test Specialist and decide to take the oral HIV test. This takes about 15 minutes. During this session you will be given an anonymous number that connects the oral sample to you. In a week, you come back to get your results. You MUST bring your anonymous number since there is no other way linking your results to you. Remember, both of these sessions are anonymous, meaning we don’t know your name, and they are confidential, so everything said/known will stay between you and the test specialist.

    The Pretest Session and Testing

This is the first time you meet with an HIV test specialist. The pretest counseling session can give you information about the HIV antibody test, safer sex methods, and it may help you decide if this is the right time for you to take the HIV antibody test. If you decide to take the HIV test, the specialist will administer the oral HIV test. This is also a great time to ask any questions you have!

    Results

A week after your first appointment you come back for your posttest counseling session and for the results. If the results are negative we will go over some of the things we talked about and answer any other questions you may have. If the results are positive and HIV antibodies have been detected in your oral sample, we will do our best to provide you with a network of resources and support.
