Gifts in Action :: Why I Give
Jan Miyake ‘96
Assistant Professor of Music Theory, Oberlin Conservatory of Music
“Oberlin has touched my life in many ways: from the friends I have today to the values by which I live my life, from my experience in graduate school to my career in academia. One of the ways I give back to Oberlin is through gifts of money. Even though my gift is tiny in the grand scheme of things, I think it’s important enough to give that I’ve done so every year since I graduated. I have taught at the college level for six years and have spent the last three at Oberlin. With this perspective, I am stunned and humbled by the excellence of the students and faculty on this campus. If alumni don’t give, Oberlin will not be able to sustain its high quality of teaching and learning – Oberlin’s most precious commodity. Even though I’ll never be a “major donor,” my small consistent gifts are part of the lifeblood of Oberlin. I have taken a lot from my undergraduate experience at Oberlin; I give because it feels good and necessary to be part of what keeps Oberlin healthy.”
