Gifts in Action :: Why I Give
Owen Cramer '62
M. C. Gile Professor of Classics and Director of Comparative Literature, Colorado College
"Many organizations ask me for money, but Oberlin is the only one for which I have actually raised money. It's because I am, more and more, an Oberlinian. In an age of identities, mine is with a set of experiences, outlooks, and doctrines that Oberlin encouraged me to have. In an age of overworked professionals, I send money back to Oberlin because Oberlin offered its services – at a discount – as a trainer of amateurs and enthusiasts eager for overwork. Oberlin encouraged me to run track, play Gershwin, edit other people's short stories, and say disrespectful things about great poets. Because I believe that, somehow, those experiences are still encouraged at Oberlin, I pay money to help balance the budget. If I end up with an estate to share, I'll share it with Oberlin."
