Gift Planning » The Charles Martin Hall Society
The Charles Martin Hall Heritage Society celebrates one of the largest single gifts that Oberlin College has ever received—the over $10 million bequest of Charles Martin Hall in 1914. It also recognizes all donors who have included Oberlin in their estate plans.
Charles Martin Hall graduated from Oberlin College in 1885. Eight months later, he unlocked the key to the aluminum industry. Over his lifetime, Hall amassed a great fortune from his involvement with the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA). His 1914 bequest was the largest single bequest ever received by Oberlin College until 2003.
Many alumni, parents, and friends have followed Hall’s lead and made thoughtful gifts through their estate plans. Donors who make this type of gift bestow a great honor upon Oberlin. Their generosity ensures Oberlin’s continued commitment to outstanding liberal arts education and professional music training, as well as to the College’s core values of academic rigor, artistic excellence, equity and access, civic engagement, and social justice.
These donors are recognized as members of The Charles Martin Hall Heritage Society. Their names are inscribed on a large plaque that resides at The Oberlin Inn. Anyone who makes a deferred gift to Oberlin becomes eligible to join this eminent group of donors.
