Some outside, unnatural force has always impacted the land. The hand
of man marks nature in a physical sense, through industry, technology,
and agriculture. But more than plows and factories shape the spirit
of a landscape. The spirits of the people who inhabit a specific place
influence it also. The landscapes I have painted were originally my
interpretation of the rolling hills of Pennsylvania; the place that
I call home. This natural place has certainly been scared by strip
mining, and agricultural erosion. It has been divided by highways
and strip malls. But it has also been divided by widespread poverty,
racism, unemployment and lack of quality education. The paintings
that I make depict a place that has been touch by an eerie light,
as if some force is tainting the natural and beautiful place that
many call home. These paintings show the land divided by electrical
lines, but it is the social problems that have colored these landscapes
with an uneasy light.
