Consider the solubility of carbon dioxide
CO2 + 3H2O = HCO3–1 + H3O+1 + H2O = CO3–2 + 2H3O+1
Increasing pressure drives CO2 into solution
i.e., HCO3–1 & CO3–2 are more stable at higher pressures
Lower temperatures also lead to increase in the solubility of CO2
HCO3–1 & CO3–2 can attain higher concentrations in colder water
