The Baiga people of eastern Madhya Pradesh

Drummers and dancers

The Baiga live in the Maikal Hills near the source of the Narmada River at Amarkantak. The young people of the villages sing dadariya ("forest songs") and dance in curving lines to the music of the mandar and timki drums and thiski clappers, as seen at left.

I spent several months with the Baiga people in 1982 and have produced a videotape of their dances entitled Baiga Dances, produced by Original Music. This 40-minute video was shot originally on Super 8 sync-sound film and comes with a 20-page booklet. Please see VIDEOTAPES for further information.
