Interview on Sex Education
With a 20 year old college female
Interviewer:  Jamie Safian

Q:  How old were you when you first learned about sex?
A:  I was 10 years old and in fifth grade when I first learned about sex.

Q:  How did you learn about sex?
A:  We learned about sex in my science class in fifth grade.

Q:  In addition to this general ecducation, did you talk to your parents about  sex?
A:  No.  I guess I didn’t feel it was necessary at the time.  I don’t really remember  having any questions for them.

Q:  Do you think your parents would have been open to talking about sex with  you, if you would have wanted to?
A:  Yes.  I definitely think my mom would have answered any questions for me if  I would have asked her.  We are very close and have a very open  relationship.  This was just a subject that never really came up.

Q:  If you would have had additional questions after learning about sex in school  who would you go to?
A:  My sister.  She is five years older than me and I would have felt most  comfortable going to her.

Q:  Do you remember having any misconceptions about sex when you were  younger?
A:  I’m sure I had at least a few misconceptions, but I really don’t remember what  they are.

Q:  How did you learn about using protection against STDs and pregnancy?
A:  I also learned about this in school.  I’m pretty sure this was also in my  science class.

Q:  How old do you think most people are when they have sex for the first time?
A:  I think most people are around 16 years old when they lose their virginity.   This is how old I was when I lost my virginity.

Q:  Do you feel that learning about sex in school was an effective method of  learning.
A:  I think that I learned a lot of good basic knowledge in school about sex, but  this doesn’t make up for experience.  They can teach you all they want,  but people still have to make their own decisions and figure things out for  themselves in regard to sex.
