When parents decide to be in an interracial relationship
When talking to younger children...
  • keep it simple
  • explain that they should not judge people based on their race
  • be honest
  • explain different cultural rituals when appropriate, not all at once (example -  holidays)
  • allow them to ask questions
When talking to adolescents...
  • talk to them like they are an adult
  • be honest
  • listen to them
  • talk to them at length, explain what differences they can expect
  • allow them to ask questions

  • be open to cultural differences
  • make an effort to learn more about the culture
  • be honest
  • be supportive
  • listen to your son or daughter
  • ask questions
  • be willing to meet him or her
  • be willing to meet his or her parents
  • trust your children in their decisions
  • understand it is not easy
  • understand it is your problem not your kids
  • find a support network if having difficulty accepting the relationship
