Introduction

The ultimate goal of the transition from adolescents to adulthood is to have developed into a socially responsible productive member of society. The basic elements of transitioning from adolescents to adulthood, regarding values, are best described in relation to peers, family and self. It is during this transition, that the values adolescents were brought up on are challenged, especially by the adolescent and his/her peers. According to Benedict, adolescents spend much of their time in the company of peers and away from their families (Benedict, 1938). It can be found in the American culture that, the transition from adolescents to adulthood, is based upon the subtle transition of values that is not marked by ceremonial events or rites of passage, rather it is a time when adolescents hear their “parents’ voices”, and the teen decides whether or not to follow the family’s value system, or to go against the beliefs upon which they were raised.
