Green Canyon Petroleum Seep

The Green Canyon petroleum seep (lease block 234) supports a chemosynthetic community of bacterial mats, chemosynthetic clams, tubeworms (Escarpia and Lamellibranchia). The Green Canyon seep occurs at 550m.

SSETI deployed two replicate sets of experiments at two locations in 1993. Two sets were located close to tubeworm thickets (pictured below) and two sets were deployed upslope near gorgonian thickets (not pictured). Poles were collected from the tubeworm area in 1995 and 2001.
