EDITORS OF THE LORAIN COUNTY NEWS DURING THE CIVIL WAR

_____

The Lorain County News was first published on March 7, 1860. It was a weekly paper, based in the town of Oberlin, Ohio, covering the news of the county. The focus of The News was on the town of Oberlin and Oberlin College with a decidedly abolitionist bent. The first publishers of the Lorain County News, V.A. Shankland and J.F. Harmon, also published the Oberlin Evangelist, another local newspaper of the time. The first editor of The News was A.B. Nettleton. He left Oberlin to become a Union soldier in the Civil War (Williams Brothers, History of Lorain County,Ohio [Cleveland, OH: Press Of Leader Printing Company, 1879] 64). After his departure, the editorship of The News changed hands annually throughout the course of the war.
