LANGSTON MIDDLE SCHOOL

SIXTH GRADE

OBERLIN, OHIO 44074

I teach math and reading at Langston Middle School in Oberlin Ohio. I am a member of the sixth grade team. The strands taught in math are geometry, algebra and logic, number relations, patterns, measurement, problem solving, probability and statistics, and data analysis.

One of the activities we do in math isThe Average Student. In this unit students in each class measure each other. We use this information to find the averages or modes. Students then make a model of the average student. A second activity is called City Changes. In this unit, we collect data on a fictional city by reading newspaper clippings, tables, charts, and graphs. The information is organized in a database by given years. (For example, the population in 1910, 1920, etc.) Students then make predictions for the future based on the given information. One year we had extra time and the students made models of some of the buildings downtown. I would like to make models of downtown and college buildings each year. In the future, we will collect information about Oberlin from the Website, and use Oberlin as our city. We will then place the results on the EOG website.
