SOME TIPS FOR RESEARCH IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES INFORMATION CENTER
1. CHECK IN DIFFERENT CATEGORIES FOR WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR.
The books are divided up into different categories to help in finding books on a given topic.
These categories, however, are completely arbitrary and often don't really reflect the entire
subject matter covered by the book. Categories such as 'Ethics, Philosophy, and Religion' and
'Cultural and Social Issues' are very vague and often contain books that could also be in other
categories. Remember, the topis of environmental studies are all interrelated and connected, and
as a result, books are too. In particular, try looking in 'Defining the Problem,' 'Ethics, Philosophy, and Religion,'
'Great Lakes and Local Issues,' and 'Text Books and Reference' no matter what your topic is.
2. TRY LOOKING AT THE RESOURCES ON THE WEST WALL.
Though there is currently a loack of coherent organization with all the binders, files, pamphlets, reports, and
everything else, we're working on this. Even now, though, there is some great stuff in there, and it's worth a look,
particularly if you're working on local issues.
3. FIND SPECIFIC TITLE IN THE BIG INCOMPLETE CATALOG.
While the task of cataloging all the books, maps, videos, periodicals and other stuff is not complete, you can
find most of what we have in the excel spreadsheet catalog, or on this webpage.
4. ASK A LIBRARIAN!
Check the hours when librarians will be here. One of them will be happy (or at least willing) to help you out
with any questions you might have. You can email them at esic@oberlin.edu.
5. CHECK ONLINE JOURNALS.
Not to detract from the value of ESIC, but there are a number of online journals which the Oberlin library subscribes to, many
of which have full text online. Go to the Oberlin Library Site, then to Journals.
JSTOR is very comprehensive, with full text, but doesn't always have the most recent stuff. OhioLink Journal center has lots
of great stuff, but not everything has full text.
