You may do this position paper as either Option 1 on Wednesday or Option 2 on Friday. I hope some people will choose to do the assignment on Wednesday, and some on Friday!
Here's the assignment:
Discuss, for 2-3 pages, a theory of ritual, carnival, liminality, communitas, celebration or ceremony as discussed by C. Bell, V. Turner, or L. Woodbridge and E. Berry, in relation to a scene, incident, situation, or character's process in Henry IV, 1. Show how the theory applies and how it doesn't, if it doesn't. What does thinking about HIV, 1 in terms of ritual actions show you about its structure, ideas, or resonant meanings?
If you want, you may emphasize this question instead: When and how do theories of play or performativity explain any of these situations, incidents, character processes more powerfully?
