Modern and contemporary Irish poetry, fiction and drama; Modern and contemporary American poetry.

John Hobbs is from Minneapolis, though he's lived in Oberlin longer by now. He has two sons in their thirties, and his wife Jutta teaches German at Case-Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Since 1966 he has been teaching 20th-century poetry and fiction at Oberlin. Recent interests have led to first-year seminars in metaphor and dialogue. His main interests in modern Irish literature are Joyce, Yeats, and Heaney. He's currently writing a book on dialogue in Joyce's early fiction. Dublin is his home away from home. He spends a large part of the summer there, and has directed an Oberlin overseas study program in Irish literature.
