Dr. Samuel Shyamala

Dr. S. Shyamala is a Reader in Economics at The American College in Madurai, India. At The American College, she teaches courses on Econometrics, International Econometrics, and Macroeconomics and is also the Dean of Women's Studies. She was a awarded the Best Teacher in Economics Award by the Malcolm-Elizabeth Adisehiah Trust in Chennai in 2007 for her work in the field and has published numerous research papers. Her research focuses on rural and small scale industrial employment in India and the employment of women. During her visit to Oberlin, she is interested in studying the expenditure patterns and sources of income for students at Oberlin in order to compare them to those of students in Madurai. She also aims to analyze gender differences in expenditure patterns while comparing the costs of higher education in both the United States and India after globalization. With this research, she hopes to design a course on the Indo-US pattern of consumption in college, thus further connecting American College students to their counterparts from Oberlin. In addition to this research, she hopes to take courses in International Economics and Macroeconomic theory to further broaden her knowledge and to gain exposure to a different pedagogy and research methodology.
