Education:
Ph.D., University of Chicago, 1994
M.A., Middlebury College, 1985
B.A., Bennington College, 1984
Research Interests:
My first book on Korean nationalism focused on
how particular gendered tropes have had a persistent
and pervasive life in the fashioning of Korean modernity.
In connection with my interest in gender and narrative,
I have become increasingly interested in commemorative
culture, and in particular, the relationship between
war and memory of the Cold War. My current research
into the Korean War attempts to explore both American
and Korean processes of memorialization within the
social and political context of anti-communism and
colonial liberation movements.
Teaching Interests:
My teaching and research interests are closely
tied. My courses include: Modern Korean History; War
and Nation-Building in East Asia, 1868-1979; The Korean
War and the Culture of the Cold War; War, History
and Memory in Post-Cold War Asia, and Colonialism
and Post-Colonialism in East Asia.
