"Oberlin College's Chinese department is very much so
like a tightknit family. The faculty is there for the
students both inside as well as outside of the
classroom. The main focus of the Chinese department,
that being the language program, is demanding yet
extremely fulfilling. The faculty's humor, energy and
playfulness combine to make a classroom experience like
none other. Besides language studies, the Chinese
department has expanded to include classes in Chinese
literature and calligraphy; thus offering a well-rounded
curriculum incorporating language studies as well as
cultural studies."

"The Chinese teachers at Oberlin are wonderful! They all
really care about their students. All the teachers
have a great knowledge of both modern and ancient
Chinese. Because there are no graduates at Oberlin, it
is really easy to set up a private reading with the
professors if you have previous experience with the
language. I have done private
readings in modern Chinese newspaper articles, in
advanced
calligraphy, and am currently doing a private reading on
communist essays (primarily by Mao) from the 1930's to
1960's."

"I started taking Chinese at Oberlin just for fun,
expecting to take one, maybe two semesters. Now I'm an
EAS major, because the Chinese program turned out to be
not only a great set of classes, but a wonderful
community too. The experience and personal attention of
the professors is amazing and extends way outside the
classroom. Participating in the Chinese department has
definitely been one of the most rewarding experiences
I've had at Oberlin."
