First year Chinese is designed to help students develop and practice basic language skills, including listening, speaking, reading and writing. The class has two instructional goals: 1) to enable students to communicate in basic Chinese for everyday purposes; 2) to lay a solid foundation for students interested in pursuing further studies of the language. By the end of the course, students will know about 500 characters and will be trained to reproduce and recognize these characters in different words. This course also includes an element of Chinese culture, and will introduce cultural items whenever possible. Although all teaching materials are in traditional characters, simplified characters will be introduced in class by the end of the first year. |
