Kate Phillips
Major: history
Minor: math
IÕm a senior from New York City (like so many other
students here). I have really enjoyed the change of pace, and have never felt a
lack of things to do. There are always great concerts, plays, or movies going
on, or just interesting people to spend time with. IÕm majoring in history
(concentrating in American history) and minoring in math. IÕm also really
interested education, so IÕve been working in the local elementary school for
the past year as an America Reads tutor, and with the practicum in tutoring
class. This year IÕll also be working with either middle school or high school
students on projects for History Day.
On the less academic side, IÕve been on the
softball team for the past three years, and really enjoyed the experience of
being a student-athlete. IÕve also worked in Dascomb dining hall every
semester, and I ate in a co-op for one semester.
Short List of Favorites
Local Cuisine: Anything on the breakfast
menu at Black River. ItÕs just all pretty delicious, and reasonably priced.
Authors: Recently, IÕve been re-reading
quality childrenÕs books. ItÕs amazing how different it is to read them when
youÕre older.
Under-advertised resource
at Oberlin: the online
classifieds.
You can find almost anything you want on there—a bike, a bookshelf, a
ride home—and you can ask for anything you canÕt.
Favorite First-year
Courses
AAST 281 (African American Studies), Practicum in
Tutoring. This is a great way to get involved in the community and have an
enriching, hands-on academic experience.
MATH 220, Discrete Mathematics. This class is a real
departure from most math classes, and itÕs a lot of fun because it will force
you to think in very different ways.
