Part-Time Status
Oberlin students are required to take a full schedule of courses
(between 12 and 16 credits for Arts and Sciences students
and between 12 and 17 for Conservatory and Double Degree students)
each semester. Under limited circumstances, a student may
request part-time status for a semester, i.e., register for
fewer than 12 credit hours. To do so, Arts and Sciences students
should see a dean in the Office of the Dean of Studies before
registration or during add/drop for a given semester. Conservatory
students should see the Associate Dean of the Conservatory.
Double-Degree students can go to the Office of the Dean of
Studies or the Office of the Associate Dean of the Conservatory.
Students who have permission to study part-time, pay special part-time tuition
fee (per credit) based on the number of credits they are authorized to take.
The part-time study cost is adjusted every year – consult the Course
Catalog for this year's fee.
There are other consequences of part-time study students should be aware of.
We advise you to look into these before you request the part-time status:
- Financial aid may be affected by part-time status. Students
who receive financial aid from Oberlin College should consult
the Financial Aid Office, Carnegie 123.
- Students who have health care coverage or other type of insurance
through their parents, should consult the appropriate policy
to make sure they will be covered while they are studying part-time.
