Incompletes
There are two kinds of incompletes – Educational and Emergency. All requests
for incompletes and extensions of incompletes from Arts and Sciences students
must be submitted to the Office of the Dean of Studies.
During a student's career at Oberlin, he/she may have a maximum of two
Educational Incompletes—authorized by the course instructor—for educational
reasons. Educational Incomplete Forms become available in the Office of the Dean
of Studies three weeks before the end of the semester. They must be completed,
signed by the course instructor, and returned to the Office of the Dean of Studies
before the time of the scheduled final exam or project for the course. The incomplete
work is due by the end of the first week of Winter Term for fall semester courses,
and by three weeks after the end of the semester for spring semester courses.
Additional incompletes (beyond two) for educational reasons may be authorized
by the Dean of Studies only under very exceptional circumstances.
IMPORTANT NOTE: An instructor may deny a request for an educational incomplete.
Educational incompletes are NOT available in Conservatory courses.
Emergency Incompletes may be authorized by the Dean of Studies for reasons that
arise from circumstances beyond the student's control. These incompletes
are usually for medical, psychological, or life-crisis reasons and must be requested
before the scheduled final exam or project for the course. Incompletes for medical
reasons require a letter from a doctor or a form completed by the Office of Student
Health Services. The due date for finishing work is set according to how much
time was lost during the semester, up to three weeks after the end of the semester.
DEADLINE EXTENSIONS: The due date for coursework under either kind of incomplete
may be extended ONLY for emergency reasons. If the coursework is not completed
within the specified time, a grade will be recorded based on the extent to which
the course requirements have been met.
