About the Office of the Dean of Studies
WHAT WE DO
For students and faculty members in the College of Arts and
Sciences and for Double-Degree students, the Office of the
Dean of Studies:
coordinates academic advising; makes initial advisor
assignments for new students; assists students in finding new
advisors
as necessary;
provides information sessions for new and returning
advisors;
oversees students' academic standing by monitoring
grade reports and communicating with students, their advisors,
and
the Academic Standing Committee;
offers information and advice about academic policy issues,
including general academic requirements, requests for permission
for part-time and over-load study, emergency and academic incompletes
at the end of each semester, exceptions to Winter Term policies,
and final exam time changes;
provides information and counseling about Individual Majors.
For students and faculty members in both divisions, the Office
of the Dean of Studies:
offers advice and resources for exploring off-campus study
options including a Study-Away Library;
advises students about applying for Academic Leave of Absence,
Enrolled-Not-in-Residence status, and Finish Away status;
advises students about personal and medical leaves of absence
and withdrawing from the College;
advises international students on issues related to their US
immigration status and cultural adjustment, and offers academic,
career, and personal counseling;
provides information and counseling about Winter Term.

WHO WE ARE
Kathryn Stuart, Dean of Studies

Kathryn Stuart oversees the Office of the Dean of Studies
and is responsible for helping students to succeed in their
Oberlin College careers. She coordinates academic advising,
makes initial advisor assignments for new students and assists
students in finding new advisors as needed. She provides information
sessions for new and returning advisors. Dean Stuart oversees
the academic standing process for Arts and Sciences students,
and together with the Academic Standing Committee she monitors
the students' degree progress. In collaboration with the associate
and the assistant deans in her office, she offers information
and advice about academic policy issues (general academic
requirements, requests for permission for part-time and over-load
study, emergency and academic incompletes at the end of each
semester, exceptions to Winter Term policies, and final exam
time changes). Dean Stuart also provides information and counseling
about Individual Majors.
Ellen Sayles, Associate Dean of Studies

Ellen Sayles coordinates, along with the Off-Campus Study
Committee, Oberlin's study away program. In this role, she
advises students on off-campus study options, and on applying
for Academic Leave of Absence, Enrolled-Not-in-Residence status,
and Finish Away status. She is also an international student
advisor and offers guidance and assistance on issues including
immigration status, cultural adjustment, academic, career,
and personal counseling. Dean Sayles also advises students
about personal and medical leaves of absence and withdrawals.
She also offers general academic advising, and in particular,
she advises the Double-Degree students and the College Music
majors.
Katya Grim, Associate Dean of Studies

Katya Grim advises Arts and Sciences students on their progress
toward graduation, and in particular, she evaluates requests
for various policy exceptions, such as part-time and over-load
study, emergency and educational incompletes, additional private
readings, exceptions to Winter Term policies, and final exam
time changes. Dean Grim is also an international student advisor
and offers guidance and assistance on issues including immigration
status, social security, employment and taxation, as well
as general academic and personal counseling for international
students. Dean Grim also coordinates the English as a Second
Language program at Oberlin.

Doane, Assistant Dean of Studies

Randal
Doane coordinates the Academic Ambassadors Program, which
is a network of peer
advisors who help first-year students negotiate the intellectual,
administrative, and cultural
terrain of Oberlin College. Dean Doane serves as an academic
advisor, offers counseling on academic matters, and assists
students taking personal leaves, medical leaves, and withdrawals.
Dean Doane's academic background is in sociology, and he uses
qualitative and quantitative research tools to assess and
improve the services offered by the Office of the Dean of
Studies.
