Oberlin & the Environment
Adam Joseph Lewis Center for Environmental Studies
The AJLC was conceived as an integrated building-landscape system that would function as a core component of Oberlin's Environmental Studies curriculum.
With over 150 environmental sensors installed throughout the building and landscape, the AJLC's data monitoring and display system provides a unique opportunity to visualize in real-time the flows of energy and cycling of matter that are necessary to support the built environment.
This website is designed to share the AJLC with students, educators, activists, architects, and all others interested in learning from and expanding upon the lessons emerging from the AJLC. Campus Resource Monitoring System
Oberlin College is developing a comprehensive system to monitor and display electricity and water consumption in dormitories. The premise of the system is that providing dormitory residents with easily interpretable real-time feedback on resource use and on the financial and environmental impact of this consumption motivates and empowers students to conserve resources.
This website is designed to show dormitory electricity use to campus residents and all others interested in the potential for information feedback to change behavior in ways that minimize resource consumption and maximize environmental performance.
Environmental Studies Program
The Environmental Studies Program provides an interdisciplinary approach to the study of human interactions with the environment. Of central concern are the impact of technology on natural environments and its implications for human welfare. The program seeks to apply the different perspectives of the humanities, social sciences, biology, and the physical sciences to environmental and natural resource issues.
This website is intended to share Program news, course links, faculty contact information, and the Environmental Studies Annual Newsletter with current and prospective students, educators, and others.
Environmental Policy Implementation Group
The Environmental Policy Implementation Group (EPIG) is an active coalition of students advocating for and assisting with the full implementation of Oberlin College's Environmental Policy. Adopted in March of '04 by the Board of Trustees, this far-reaching policy addresses campus energy production and consumption, building construction, modernization, and maintenance, land use and development, transportation and material use by the College.
Subscribe to the EPIG mailing list to stay up-to-date on campus and community environmental projects in which you can get involved.
Oberlin EnviroAlums
Comprised of alumni who have concerns about environmental issues like biodiversity loss, climate change, over-consumption, equity, pollution, population, and social justice, EnviroAlums is an alumni affiliate group created to assist with, and to advocate for, environmental education and stewardship within the Oberlin College community. Their goal is to provide advisory input to the institution, to encourage and support environmental educational venues on and off campus, to nurture environmental stewardship, and to raise funds for environmental education.
This website provides Steering Committee minutes, reports and mailings; recent workshop and program materials; and a history of Environmental Studies at Oberlin.
Oberlin College Environmental Policy
At its March meeting, the Board of Trustees adopted the following Environmental Policy Statement, proposed and approved by the General Faculty Planning Committee:
The core mission of Oberlin College is the education of its students. One aspect of such education is the demonstration by its actions of the College's concern for, and protection of, its physical environment.
Oberlin College must be a responsible steward of the environment. As such, the College will seek 1) to reduce the rate at which it contributes to the depletion and degradation of natural resources; 2) to increase the use of renewable resources; and 3) to consider other measures that can enhance the physical environment in which we live. The development of priorities and the implementation of decisions regarding energy production and use, the use and development or our grounds, facilities construction, modernization, maintenance, transportation, and materials use will be informed by the environmental impact they have. The President or delegated officials will periodically advise the community of the College's progress in this area.
