Spencer S. Myer Spencer S. Myer, Class of 2000

Spencer Myer grew up in North Ridgeville, Ohio, where his family still lives. “You would expect the Conservatory to be a very competitive environment. In truth, it is intense, but it’s also wonderfully collaborative and supportive. I’ve gained as much from accompanying other students as I have in solo performances. And the people at Oberlin are from all over the world. Just having a conversation with someone whose background is so different from my own is incredibly stimulating. I hadn’t considered that when I first came here, but it’s what I will miss the most when I leave.” Spencer, the recipient of a Conservatory Dean’s Scholarship and the John Elvin Piano Prize for Juniors, studies with Peter Takács. He has performed at several prestigious classical piano competitions, including the Houston Symphony Young Artists competition and the Chopin Competition in Chicago, where he took top honors. He plans to pursue graduate study in music and eventually to combine performance with teaching. He spent a recent summer studying music and performing in Urbania, Italy, as part of the Oberlin-in-Italy program.
