The Oberlin Tech Card and Theft & User Damage Insurance
The Technology Store offers Tech Card benefits (previously called Buyers' Assurance Program) for Professional Line Notebooks when purchased with a three-year manufacturer’s warranty. These systems must have been purchased directly from the Technology Store. Custom configurations, online web orders or orders through other retail outlets are not covered. The Tech Card provides the following benefits:

  • Extended Manufacturer's Warranty: These computers include a three-year manufacturer's warranty against defects. Laptop batteries are under warranty for one year. This policy does not cover user damage (spills, drops, general wear such as dents and scratches, and theft).
  • Laptop Loaner Program: Keep up with papers and e-mails while manufacturer’s parts may be delayed. If your computer is away for a repair covered by the original 3-year warranty, the Technology Store will loan you a laptop. Loaners are only available to Tech Card holders (or BAP-covered BTS machines from previous years) for repairs performed by CIT, and are subject to availability. They are not available for repairs due to user damage or software problems. Loaners are not guaranteed to be the same model as the computer in for repair. Loaners must be returned within three days of notification that your computer is ready for pick-up.
  • Lemon Policy: If your computer has more than two major internal hardware failures in the first six months of ownership, we will replace your machine, no questions asked. We are not responsible for user’s data, only for the computer and operating system. This policy does not cover user damage, software problems, batteries, external power supplies or other external damage. Some software issues, such as viruses and spyware, can cause failure to boot, and appear as hardware problems.

Theft and User Damage Insurance is also available at a discounted price for special models offered in our Back to School Sale each fall. This optional insurance is provided through Safeware, and provides 3-year coverage for loss or repairs due to theft, spills, drops or other user damage not covered by warranty. Reimbursments are up to the cost of the equipment, with a $250 deductible per incident.

For insurance on other models, like those not purchased through our Back to School Sale, please visit http://www.safeware.com/oberlin.

PLEASE NOTE: We are not responsible for any data loss.

If you have any questions about coverage, please contact the Technology Store at cstore@oberlin.edu or call 440-775-8628 for more information.

Apple Computers
Apple One-Year Limited Warranty (Three-year with Applecare):
Apple Computer, Inc. ("Apple") warrants their hardware products against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of ONE (1) YEAR from the date of original retail purchase. If a defect exists, at its option Apple will:

  1. repair the product at no charge, using new or refurbished replacement parts, OR
  2. exchange the product with a product that is new or which has been manufactured from new or serviceable used parts and is at least functionally equivalent to the original product, OR
  3. refund the purchase price of the product. A replacement product assumes the remaining warranty of the original product or 90 days, whichever provides longer coverage for you.

Damage from spills, drops or other accidental damage is NOT covered by warranty.

Obtaining Warranty Service:
To locate an Authorized Service Provider, other than The Technology Store, call any Authorized Apple Reseller or visit Apple's support web site.

Note: Data recovery is not included in the warranty service and Apple, and Oberlin's CIT, are not responsible for data that may be lost or damaged during transit or a repair.

If you have an iPod problem, the store can try to help by reseting and checking the device. But if your iPod needs a hardware repair, you need to call 1-800-SOS-APPL (767-2775).

HP Professional Line Computers
Three-year warranty on most laptops and desktops unless otherwise specified. Contact the Help Desk at x58197 for service information or http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html

Damage from spills, drops or other accidental damage is NOT covered by warranty.
