Kazim Ali
Kazim
Ali is the author of a book of poetry, The Far Mosque (Alice
James Books), a novel Quinn’s Passage, named of the Best
Books of 2005 by Chronogram, and the chapbooks River Road
and from the Book of Miriam the Prophetess. His most recent book
of poetry, The Fortieth Day, will be published by BOA Editions
in the spring of 2008.
Ali’s poetry has appeared in many national journals
including American Poetry Review, Boston Review, Barrow Street, jubilat,
Hayden’s Ferry Review, The Iowa Review, Colorado Review, and
New Orleans Review. An essay on his work by Meena Alexander appeared
in American Poet. Ali’s essays on poetry and poetics have
appeared widely, and in 2007 he will begin writing a regular column for
American Poetry Review.
Kazim
Ali received an MA in English Literature from the University at Albany,
specializing in postcolonial and post-structural theory, and an MFA in
Creative Writing from New York University. In 2003 he co-founded the independent
press Nightboat Books and served as its publisher from 2004-2007. Under
his leadership Nightboat Books published numerous critically acclaimed
books, including Radical Love: 5 Novels by Fanny Howe, The Truant
Lover by Juliet Patterson, and the forthcoming Sober Ghost: Selected
Early Poems by Michael Burkard.
In addition to his work at Oberlin College, Ali teaches
in the Stonecoast MFA program, housed at the University of Southern Maine,
and has also been a visiting writer or faculty member at various retreats
including the Frost Place Festival of Poetry, the Kundiman Retreat for
Asian American Poets, and the Bucknell Seminar for Younger Poets.
His
diverse professional experiences include four years on the liberal arts
faculty of The Culinary Institute of America, a term as president of the
United States Student Association, and several years dancing with the
Cocoon Theatre Modern Dance Company co-directed by Marguerite and Andres
San Millan.
