Engage

By engaging our community of alumni, faculty, staff and friends, we offer a challenging and diverse array of internships and other unique opportunities for students to explore their entrepreneurial ideas in a real-world context.

Entrepreneurship scholars

Application Deadline: November 10, 2008

Every winter term students do tremendously creative projects. The Entrepreneurship Scholars Program affords students the opportunity to pursue those projects with the addition of a seminar week designed to support them in challenging, stretching, and realizing their ideas.

We support students who have a wide variety of goals ranging from starting grassroots organizations, offering a new product or service, launching a tour, commercializing a discovery, and beyond. We look for students who have the passion and drive to make something happen, and can benefit from having the time, skills, and contacts to explore their idea during winter term.

January 4-10, 2009
Scholars spend the week in New York City learning key entrepreneurial skills to support their ideas. This seminar week features 12-15 speakers from a variety of fields, an individual shadow day with a professional relevant to each scholar, group discussion, and an alumni networking reception. Most costs are covered, but scholarships are also available.

January 11-25, 2009
Scholars work on their own projects independently in the location of their choice. This time might include (but is not limited to) research, implementing a project, or an extended shadow experience. Scholars will also consult with a mentor of their choosing during this time. No costs are covered during this period, but support is available through the Creativity Fund, CIGSIE, and other sources.

January 26, 2009
Scholars return to Oberlin to learn about the support systems for entrepreneurship in Northeast Ohio. This day will also feature an alumni networking reception.

January 27, 2009
Scholars deliver their final presentations.

Entrepreneurs and other professionals interested in participating as speakers, mentors, or shadow hosts are asked to contact us at creativity@oberlin.edu or 440-775-5383.

Internships

Internships are an important tool for gaining the knowledge and experience needed to launch an idea. Through summer and winter term internships students can further explore markets and make important contacts. Oberlin's Creativity & Leadership Project is dedicated to providing support for internships that further entrepreneurial development. The project supports internships ranging from “shadowing” and working with a mentor to developing fundamental skills needed to launch a venture successfully.
