It gives Oberlin Conservatory of Music great pleasure to announce an exciting week of events featuring the master teaching of Richard Miller, Wheeler Professor Emeritus of Music Performance at Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Joining him are distinguished guests from The Voice Center at the Cleveland Clinic – Douglas Hicks, PhD, CCC-SLP, Tom Abelson, MD and Claudio Milstein, PhD – and Donald G. Miller of VoceVista.
This week of extensive voice exploration is part of Oberlin Conservatory’s twenty-year commitment to Voice Performance Pedagogy. All persons who deal with the singing voice, either as active performers or as teachers, and who want to learn more about efficient voice function as it relates to artistic performance are welcome.
Richard Miller founded his teaching in past Oberlin Institutes on the conviction that artistic expression and performance communication are possible only when freed through technical skill.
Who should attend?
The Symposium is designed for professional singers, voice teachers, choral conductors, coach-accompanists and undergraduate and graduate singers. It is a unique opportunity to refurbish teaching and performance skills, as well as to gain knowledge about vocal health and “cutting edge” technology as might be applied to pedagogic questions.
As scheduling permits, individuals may sing in master classes. Because each participant is part of the lecture, group instruction, and observed teaching sessions, everyone is involved.
Participants with particular interest in performing in the public master classes with Professor Miller are welcome to send a CD of one or two selections and/or submit repertoire suggestions.
You may also upload a sound file (mp4/mpeg4). **Please email
lorraine.manz1@gmail.com with any audition recordings via email. Kindly
do not email mp4 files to any oberlin.edu account due to email quota.**
Those who wish to sing should plan to sign up for the coaching sessions on Monday afternoon, June 9.
Stress is upon the interaction of technical skill and performance communication.
Additional repertoire coaching and singing opportunities are found below and will use sign up sheets available at registration.
Information about VoceVista
This portion of the Symposium will be a lively introduction to the technology for newcomers and will concurrently provide detailed instruction to any VoceVista subscribers in attendance. This is a unique opportunity to combine the extraordinary sharing of insights that has characterized past VoceVista workshops with attendance in classes given by one of the world's acknowledged master teachers.
VoceVista workshops have as a principal task the explanation of some of the many practical applications of the software in singing instruction. As is often the case with computer programs, manuals are intimidating, and the learning process is far more efficient when you get it in your own fingers with the help of someone who thoroughly understands the program. VoceVista-Pro users or subscribers are encouraged to bring their laptops to these sessions. Use of a laptop, however, is not required to benefit from the presentations. All will be readily observable by use of projection and sound system. Donald G. Miller will deal with everything from the basic moves to sophisticated maneuvers of formant tuning.
