The
Oberlin Conservatory of Music is pleased to present the Vocal Academy
for High-School Students, a nine-day, intensive workshop that offers
dedicated high-school voice students age 16 years and older (high
school graduates are excluded) an opportunity to explore the many facets
involved in developing the singer's art. Technical work will include
the
development of posture, breathing, phonation, resonance, and articulation.

Daily
master classes in performance will deal with performance practice, diction,
style, phrasing, and textual communication. Classes also will cover such
topics as preparation for auditions, stage deportment, characterizations,
presentation of songs, and analysis and understanding of texts. Private
lessons are included in the tuition. Acting classes will focus heavily
on song interpretation. Students will be encouraged to develop more freedom
of movement and gesture while singing. Improvisational exercises will
create awareness of non-verbal communication skills and help develop spontaneous
creativity.
Evening
workshops will include discussion of what is expected at a college
audition
and techniques for more effective auditions. Students will receive feedback
on auditions performed during the workshop. College and career options
for the singer-actor will be discussed. Following registration, the workshop
will begin with a performance by guest artist, Martha Guth (an Oberlin
alumna).
The academy will conclude in a performance by the participants on Sunday,
July 27, at 1:30 p.m.
This
is an intensive, serious workshop directed toward students who are considering
the pursuit of a career in vocal performance or vocal music education.
Participants are expected to be present for the entire program.
Each
participant will have two lessons - one with each faculty member, four
masterclass presentations critiqued by both faculty members, and several
coachings. Each participant performs in the final concert, and will
receive an individual critique of the teachers' work with them, copies
sent to the student and student's teacher in early September.
