Singers should have plenty of Italian repertoire prepared--the maestri go through repertoire very quickly. Younger students may use Handel, Pergolesi, Scarlatti, Mozart, Bellini, Donizetti, Rossini, etc. We prefer that you work in the Italian repertoire. The faculty wants you to take any of your performance repertoire into the Italian coaches, especially for diction and style. If you have some duets, trios, and/or chamber music you'd like to bring--we will probably be able to include them. Please check with your teacher regarding suitability and memorize your material before we leave. You may use your time with the maestri as you wish--some students want to learn a complete role, others want to learn only arias. It is wise to bring the Ricci cadenza book along for any arias requiring them (they will teach you the traditional cadenzas). Your time with the maestri (coaches) should include any performance
material you have for the month, plus any other
material you wish to study--arias, complete roles, etc.
Singers with Opera Roles
Singers with opera roles should come with the part completely memorized (this includes understudies). All singers are expected to arrive with the selections they plan to sing for In-House and other concerts memorized. Opera scene material must also be memorized. Failure to do this may result in forfeiture of the performance.
We recommend placing your music in a light-weight folder for traveling. Bring two copies of any arias you may wish to study plus the opera scores if you are so assigned. The maestri do not usually bring copies with them and it is difficult to look over their shoulders!
Pre-existing Ensembles
Pre-existing ensembles should bring at least 2 already rehearsed works of chamber music and will be assigned at least one collaborative composition by the chamber music program faculty. Participants will be informed about assigned repertoire well in advance of the start of the program in order to provide ample preparation time.
Individual Instrumentalists
Instrumentalists who register individually will receive assignments of at least 3 works of chamber music by the chamber music program faculty. Participants will be informed about assigned repertoire well in advance of the start of the program in order to provide ample preparation time.
Instrumentalists are expected to bring their parts and arrive with their previously rehearsed works and musical assignments prepared.
Pianists will be assigned to perform one to two pieces of chamber music and will be assigned to work with individual singers by the Oberlin in Italy chamber music faculty and the director of the pianists program. Pianists may request specific chamber music repertoire in consultation with the chamber music faculty, and will be informed about assigned repertoire well in advance of the start of the program in order to provide ample preparation time.
