GETTING AROUND AREZZO

Walk

A highly recommended mode or transportation in Arezzo, especially within the old city. Many streets are for pedestrians only or blocked to motorized traffic during the afternoon. Walking distances within the old city do not exceed 15 minutes from any point to the other.

Car

Not a recommended way of getting around in Arezzo. Parking is expensive (up to € 2 an hour), complicated (you can only prepay a maximum of 2-3 hours) and very difficult to find except for the city parking garage (expect to pay a lot for parking there). Traffic in Arezzo is also very confusing due to numerous one-way streets and traffic prohibitions which regulate access to the inner city in the afternoons and evenings.

Local Buses

If you don’t feel like walking or are going to one of the municipal pools, taking the bus is a good and inexpensive way of getting around. As on the train, REMEMBER TO VALIDATE YOUR TICKET when you get on board the bus (no need to do that with a monthly pass).

In 2007, the prices for tickets were:
City ticket “Biglietto urbano” valid for 70 minutes: € 0,90
Suburban ticket” Biglietto a bordo” valid for 70 minutes: € 2,00
Block of 4 tickets ”Carnet” valid for 70 minutes: € 3,20
A Monthly pass “Abbonamento mensile ordinario” is available for € 26,00 and will give you unlimited access to all Arezzo city and suburban buses.

Scooter

For those who must have a motor propelling them forward, renting a scooter is a much better way to get around Arezzo than using a car since parking and traffic are much less restrictive. This form of transportation is very popular in Italy, as it is in the rest of Europe. “Biciclette” are a good choice of transportation for Oberlin in Italy students, but be aware that the center parts of Arezzo have steep slopes. Check with Axofidis (see above) for prices.
