The
Oberlin Orchestra and the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra follow a
demanding schedule of six hours of rehearsal each week as well
as concerts every three to four weeks. Musicians are exposed
to a cross section of orchestral literature, and perform well-known
works from the standard orchestral repertoire as well as less
familiar works ranging from the baroque to the contemporary.
The orchestra also collaborates with the Oberlin Opera Theater
and the Conservatory’s larger choral ensembles. Virtually
every major orchestra in the world retains Oberlin alumni—often
as principal players—including the Cleveland Orchestra,
Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Philadelphia
Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Symphony, Houston
Orchestra, and many others. After his most recent engagement
at Oberlin in December 2004, Sir Simon Rattle noted, “I
was immensely impressed with my time at Oberlin. Not only were
the students excellently prepared, they also emanated a joy in
discovery and a corporate intelligence that was very moving.
In this small community, there is obviously something special
going on.” |
