from Steel to Wood
New works for percussion instruments
Friday, May 12, 7:30
Gartner Auditorium
The Cleveland Museum of Art
Free admission

Featuring Paul Cox, percussion; Gabe Bolkosky, hands and violin; Robert Esler, percussion; and David Schotzko; percussion; from Steel to Wood contrasts the urban environment and concepts of man versus machine with images and ideas dominated by nature. The program opens with Paul Strand and Charles Sheeler's 1921 silent film Manhatta with new music written by Cox for a one-of-a-kind metal instrument created by artist Daniel Balog.

Other works include Martin Wesley-Smith's For Marimba and Tape; Tierrey de May's Musique de Tables for three amplified tables (hear it to believe it); Toru Takemitsu's evocative trio Rain Tree; Keiko Abe's Variations on Japanese Children's Songs; and Cox's Totems for three marimbas.

The multi-medium performance also includes slide segments of images of Southeast Alaskan Tlinget totem poles and Japan interpolated between musical works. .
