National Endowment for the Arts grants, 1973, 1978, 1985 and 1996; ASCAP awards 1980-198l Ohio Arts Council grant, 1984, 1985 and 1993; Guggenheim award, 1990; Cleveland Arts Prize in Music, 1991; fellow at the Rockefeller Study Center, Bellagio, Italy, 1994; the Lakond Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, 1998.
