Jody L. Kerchner
Director, Division of Music Education
Associate Professor of Music Education

"I feel quite fortunate to be able to combine my two passions in life - performing and teaching. I enjoy leading children to their own musical discoveries through singing, playing instruments, listening to music, or composing. I enjoy the challenge of rehearsing a choir, challenging the singers' musical interests, and helping them expand their understanding of various styles of music. Effective music educators are those people who enjoy working with others, "lighting children's musical fires," and continuing to strive toward attaining their own musical and pedagogical excellence. It was difficult leaving full-time public school music teaching, but I decided that working at the collegiate level was also an important task. It is here that I can train and inspire others to share their love for children, teaching, learning, and music. In fact, I have the best of both worlds - I work with middle school and high school students, while training the Conservatory students. Each day is always very new and exciting because of the students and the music!"

Teaching Background:

Prior to moving to Ohio in 1996, Kerchner taught general and choral music (grades K-8) in Swarthmore, PA, and Winnetka, IL, for seven years. While in Swarthmore, she also served as her school’s “Gifted and Talented” program coordinator. One of Kerchner’s special interests in the elementary and middle school general music classes was to design school-wide related arts units.

Each Fall semester, Kerchner and students in MUED 300: Teaching Music to Adolescents, teach at the North Ridgeville Middle School, where they instruct students in sixth and seventh-grade general music classes. This is a partnership established in 1997.  It is a pre-service music education field experience opportunity for Music Education majors in their junior or senior year.
