Education:
B.A. cum laude, Yale University, 1973; M.M., University
of Illinois, 1975. Piano studies with Ylda Novik, Theodore
Lettvin, Irwin Freundlich, Donald Currier, and John
Wustman.
Prizes and Awards:
First prize, Chopin Young Pianists Competition,
Fulbright Fellowship, NEH Study Grant, Joyce Faculty
Fellowhip.
Professional Affiliations:
Accompanist and coach for many noted singers including
Placido Domingo, Cesare Siepi, Hildegard Behrens, Rita
Streich, Erie Mills, Delores Ziegler, William Stone,
Wolfgang Holzmair, Brigitte Fassbaender, Jan Opalach and
Mary Ann Hart. Recital appearances throughout Europe and the
United States. Vocal coach, Santa Fe Opera, San Francisco
Opera. Former music director, University of Tennessee Opera,
Washington Summer Opera Theater. Previously taught at
Hochschule für Musik (Vienna), University of Tennessee,
Tanglewood Music Center.
Personal:
Married to Rochelle Travis. When not making music or
teaching, likes to get outdoors, especially to backpack in
the mountains or work in his back yard "farm", where he
grows everything from chili peppers to chard.
