“Marilyn Horne is an icon,” says Dean of the Conservatory David H. Stull. “Her stature as a singer, secured by an astonishing performance career, is preserved not only by her discography but also by the legacy she has created as a teacher and mentor. We look forward to welcoming her back to Oberlin.”

As acclaimed as she is for the power and artistry of her unique and dazzling coloratura—and for her revival of many forgotten Rossini, Handel, Vivaldi, and Bellini operas—Horne is also revered as an educator.

For the third year in a row, the incomparable singer, regarded as one of the great mezzo-sopranos of the 20th century, will be in residence at the Conservatory as Distinguished Professor of Voice. Two of Ms. Horne’s lively and fascinating master classes for Oberlin voice majors will be open to the public, and both will be held in Finney Chapel, which was praised by Charles Michener of the New York Observer as “acoustically wonderful.” Ms. Horne’s first public master class is Friday, September 28th, at 8 p.m. The next master class open to the public is Sunday, September 30th, at 2 p.m.

Also included in her residency are individual lessons with Oberlin voice majors and a private master class. She will be on campus from September 28 through October 2.

She created the Marilyn Horne Foundation in 1993 to sponsor young singers in residencies, educating them even as she encourages, supports, and preserves the art of the vocal recital.

Horne had visited Oberlin twice—in 1966 and in 1978—before she became Distinguished Professor of Voice in 2005. On both occasions she performed under the auspices of the Artist Recital Series (ARS); in 1978, during the 100th anniversary season of the ARS, she performed with the Oberlin Orchestra, conducted by Emeritus Professor of Orchestral Conducting Robert Baustian.

Seating for Marilyn Horne’s master classes is general admission, and tickets, which are $5 per person, may be purchased by calling Oberlin’s Central Ticket Service (CTS) 24-hour reservation line at 440-775-8169 or 800-371-0178.

Subscribers to Oberlin’s Artist Recital Series will receive free tickets to both public master classes as part of their bonus package.
